Artificial Intelligence Is Not GTA and Never Will Be

Those AI game videos we’ve been seeing frequently on social media lately have brought the question of whether AI is the future of gaming back into the spotlight. While AI-powered games, which have become a centerpiece of the GTA debate, seem impressive for now, there’s little belief they will replace mega-hits like GTA. On the contrary, comments from industry insiders have clearly highlighted AI’s limitations.

Can AI Reach GTA’s Levels?

AI has advanced rapidly in many areas in recent years and is attracting significant attention in the gaming industry. However, the situation is different for an iconic series like GTA. The creative team behind GTA dedicated years to building its world, and the resulting detail, storytelling, and atmosphere are still considered the pinnacle of hand-crafted art. This is why many gamers and experts believe that AI can only produce visuals but cannot capture the spirit of GTA.

Artificial Intelligence Is Not GTA and Never Will Be

One of the most compelling statements supporting this view came from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. Zelnick argues that AI can never replicate the creative process of a massive project like GTA. He argues that AI merely rehashes existing data and therefore cannot demonstrate true creativity. Imagination, risk-taking, and originality are what make games like GTA unique.

Meanwhile, as the popularity of AI-powered gameplay videos grows, a divide is emerging among gamers. Some believe AI will achieve great things in the future, while others, citing the resulting awkward animations, broken physics, and inconsistent scenes, argue that this is a long way off. Both sides have a clear common ground: AI has potential, but GTA is a different universe.

AI appears poised to play a supporting role in game development, but creating an experience like GTA from start to finish on its own is currently a pipe dream. Perhaps in the future, the atmosphere will enhance, the characters will speak more naturally, or the cities will become more vibrant; but capturing GTA’s creativity, humor, and depth of story? That remains the domain of the human touch. For now, the only truth is this: AI is not GTA, and GTA will not be AI.
