Avatar: The Last Airbender Game Cancelled

According to Maximum Entertainment’s Q3 2024 earnings report, the company has canceled three game projects, one of which was an Avatar: The Last Airbender game. The canceled project is likely to be the fighting game that was announced in February. However, this has not been explicitly confirmed by the developers. Saber Interactive’s Avatar game, which it describes as a AAA RPG, remains in active development.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Developed in Partnership with Paramount Studios, Was Set to Be Released to Early Access

Developed by Maximum Entertainment, Avatar: The Last Airbender was described as a competitive multiplayer fighting game set in the universe of the original cartoon series. The game, which is set to be released in early access in 2025, has not yet been announced on which platforms it will be released. The company has not yet identified the developer of the project, so it is not known how much progress was made before the decision was made to cancel it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired on television in 2005. The cartoon series follows the last living airbender Avatar Aang and his friends Korra and Sokka as they fight to save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the Hundred Years’ War against the Fire Nation. The series’ commercial success has led to two additional seasons, a spin-off series, The Legend of Korra, and a live-action series that premiered on Netflix last year.

In the video game space, Avatar: The Last Airbender was commercially successful during its original run, with games released in 2006, 2007, and 2008. More recently, the franchise gained some momentum with the mobile game Avatar: Generations in 2022 and the game Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance last year.

Outside of the gaming world, Avatar Studios announced that Paramount is developing an animated film called Aang: The Last Airbender, which will be released on January 30, 2026. Netflix has renewed the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series for two more seasons.

While the news of this cancellation is heartbreaking for Avatar fans, there is still hope for the series’ future. In October, Paramount, Avatar Studios, and Saber Interactive announced a AAA action RPG set in the Avatar Legends universe. The company said that the game would be “the biggest video game in franchise history” and would put players in the role of an all-new Avatar character thousands of years in the past. We’ll be able to play beloved characters Aang, Azula, Prince Zuko, and Korra from the original series in the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 fighting game.
