Avengers: Doomsday Continues Marvel’s Bad Habits
As Avengers: Doomsday prepares to become one of the biggest projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a familiar problem is once again emerging behind the scenes: arriving on set with an unfinished script. Despite its massive cast, even the actors are unaware of the story’s direction, and the script is still being written. Marvel’s production model of “extra” scenes is once again a source of controversy, and the actors themselves don’t know exactly what they’re playing.
Avengers: Doomsday in the Spotlight Due to Script Issues
Marvel appears determined to maintain secrecy. However, this effort can sometimes cause significant difficulties during the production process. Statements from Rebecca Romijn, known for her role as Mystique, support this sentiment. The actress stated that she is still unaware of the details of her role in the film because the script is still unfinished. Marvel’s emphasis on secrecy is pushing even the actors into the shadows.
Working simultaneously with production isn’t a new approach for Marvel. Kevin Feige’s statement, “We’ve never started a movie without a full script, but I’ve never been satisfied with the scripts we’ve had,” suggests this approach is a conscious choice. Nevertheless, while the script is refined later through “revisions,” the idea that the actors need to know exactly what they’re doing before they go on stage is gaining traction.
The production is being written by Michael Waldron, the screenwriter of “Loki,” and Stephen McFeely. However, the script is still open to changes, and new adjustments are made daily on set. While this is considered normal for a major superhero film, it’s unacceptable to some directors. For example, James Gunn has described starting production before a fully finished script as the downfall of cinema.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, 2026. However, it remains to be seen how this major film will fare given Marvel’s long-standing habit of script uncertainty. Perhaps, not only the actors but also the producers no longer know exactly what is happening on the set.
