Barbie’s New Animated Movie Is On The Way
Following the critically acclaimed live-action Barbie film directed by Greta Gerwig, preparations for a new Barbie film have now begun in the animation world. This project, a joint venture between Illumination and Mattel Studios, will be the first animated feature film for the Barbie brand. No release date has been announced yet, but it has been confirmed that the film will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
The Barbie Universe Expands with Animation
The Barbie brand’s biggest theatrical success to date was the 2023 film starring Margot Robbie, which grossed $1.44 billion worldwide. Now, Illumination is preparing to continue this success with a new animated project. Details about the project are currently being kept under wraps, and no details about the film’s creative team have been released.
This new animated film is part of Mattel Studios’ growing cinematic plans. The company recently merged its film and television units to form Mattel Studios and announced the release of Masters of the Universe and Matchbox in 2026. It is also working on film adaptations of many classic toys, including Hot Wheels, American Girl, and Polly Pocket.
As a giant in the animation industry, Illumination appears poised to make a significant contribution to this project. The company’s major productions, including the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel and Minions 3, are slated for release in 2026. Along with these projects, the Barbie animated film will also become a significant part of Illumination’s portfolio.
Barbie has remained one of the world’s best-selling doll brands since 1959. More than 100 Barbies are sold every minute, making it one of the most engaged girls’ toys on social media. With the new animated film, the Barbie brand’s influence in the cinema world is likely to grow even further.
