Battlefield 6 Will Feature a Skill-Based Matchmaking System

The highly anticipated details about Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer are finally out. At the launch event, EA shared clear information about the game’s online matchmaking system. However, based on the statements, this system appears to be much more complex than simply matching players based on skill level.

How Will Battlefield 6 Matchmaking Work?

EA stated that Battlefield 6’s skill-based matchmaking system will be based on four key factors: ping, player location, server availability, and a limited skill metric. However, these metrics will be evaluated in different combinations across each game mode and player count. In other words, the system will operate with a different balancing logic for each mode.

According to the company, the matchmaking system is activated upon server login. However, after logging in, a second algorithm is run to balance the skill differences between players, rebalancing teams. This aims to achieve balance both before and during matches.

EA co-producer David Sirland summarized the system’s purpose by saying, “We need players’ skill levels to provide a balanced gaming experience on servers. However, this doesn’t mean everyone should only play with players of their own skill level. Battlefield should provide a battle environment where diverse players can enjoy together.”

Skill-based matchmaking has been a topic of debate among FPS players for years. When Battlefield 6’s open beta begins, its practical application will become clearer. EA states that they are open to adapting the system based on player feedback.
