Battlefield’s Story Is Much Tougher This Time
The new Battlefield game goes beyond classic conflict scenarios and sets sail for a much darker and harsher narrative. In an interview with Inverse, the game’s senior producer Philippe Ducharme stated that they were inspired by the films “Civil War” and “Dead Space” in terms of both narrative style and atmosphere. It was emphasized that these inspirations were effective in creating a story that takes the player not only to the battlefield, but also to the most fragile and striking aspects of human nature.
Battlefield’s Story is Inspired by Civil War and Dead Space
Ducharme stated that Alex Garland’s dystopian film Civil War from 2024 was particularly referenced. In the film, America is on the brink of civil war and journalists race against time to reach the White House. Battlefield creative director Roman Campos-Oriola said that taking inspiration from this fiction and addressing how ordinary but talented people behave in extraordinary situations adds depth to the story. Players will play not only a soldier, but also a character who pushes their psychological limits.
Another notable inspiration is EA’s other big project, Dead Space. Ducharme explained how they adapted the “tension curve” technique they learned while developing Dead Space to Battlefield. He stated that with this technique, they discovered how the ups and downs in the narrative keep the player alive, and that they have now transferred this understanding to the new Battlefield campaign. This time, the tension elements are shaped not only by fear, but also by the emotional intensity brought by war.
The Battlefield series has offered an action-based experience to date, but the new game aims for a more personal and impressive narrative. The narrative will center on the effects of war on the individual, the weight of decision-making moments, and ethical dilemmas. Players will have to fight not only the enemy, but also the inner world of their characters.
Meanwhile, a new gameplay image leaked from Battlefield Labs showed that the “dragging the wounded” system, a mechanic featured in Battlefield V, is back. However, the fact that this system has been visually regressed has caused controversy among fans. Still, EA sees the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 as an opportunity and aims to make a strong entry into the competitive scene with the new Battlefield game.
