Black Myth Wukong Team Broke Down in Tears
Black Myth Wukong, the work of Chinese developer Game Science, attracted attention as the first major Chinese AAA game to be released on PC and consoles in 2024. The game, which was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, lost the award to PlayStation’s first-party platformer Astro Bot. According to former Sony Santa Monica developer Alanah Pearce, the Black Myth Wukong team could not hold back their tears after the loss at the awards ceremony.
Black Myth Wukong Team’s Emotional Moment
Alanah Pearce stated in a live broadcast that she was sitting in the front row at The Game Awards 2024 and saw the Black Myth Wukong team crying when they lost the award. “The Wukong team was crying when they didn’t win; this award meant a lot to them,” Pearce said. This situation drew attention in an environment where awards do not usually cause such emotional reactions.
Feng Ji, founder of Game Science, shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo that he wrote his acceptance speech for the Game of the Year award two years ago but didn’t use it. Ji said, “The games nominated this year are great, but I really don’t understand the Game of the Year selection criteria. I came for nothing!” He also stated that during the game’s development process, some members of the team were worried that the game wouldn’t be released on time due to its flaws, but he constantly motivated them.
Black Myth Wukong was nominated alongside strong contenders such as Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Astro Bot, Balatro, Metaphor Refantazio, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Despite not winning the award, the Black Myth Wukong team is proud to be in such a prestigious category.
