Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Returns Thanks to Tencent

Blue Protocol, once developed by Amazon Games and known for its anime style, fell silent after being canceled. However, with the support of Chinese giant Tencent, the project was revived and launched on Steam as Blue Protocol: Star Resonance. The game quickly reached thousands of players, but user reviews are quite divided.

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Receives Huge Interest and Backlash

Developed by Tencent-backed studio Bokura, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance garnered significant attention, reaching 94,000 concurrent players just days after its release. The game offers activities such as hunting monsters with friends, participating in races, and enjoying minigames in a massive online world. Visually reminiscent of Genshin Impact, the game’s anime aesthetic has captivated players.

However, initial reactions to the game were as positive as they were critical. Of the over 6,000 reviews on Steam, only 48% were positive, meaning the game currently holds a “Mixed” rating. A significant portion of players complained that the system was overly complex and artificially limited game progress. One user commented, “The art style is nice, but that’s all I have to say. It feels like a mobile game with daily quests and energy limits.”

Another player expressed their disapproval: “Progressing the story, mining, entering dungeons—everything is limited. You can’t play for more than 30 minutes because the energy system stops you.” These criticisms reinforce the view that Star Resonance has the typical gacha-based mobile game structure.

Some players are also bothered by the fact that the game has 16 different in-game currencies. This suggests that the economic system is overly complex and constantly pushes players towards microtransactions. However, some users maintain that the game’s art design and music are quite successful.

Despite all this mixed reception, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance has managed to remain a trending topic among MMO enthusiasts. Only time will tell if the project, reborn with Tencent’s support, can regain player trust with future updates.
