Borderlands 4 May Experience Performance Issues on Switch 2

The news that Borderlands 4 would be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 generated excitement, but developer Randy Pitchford’s recent statements may cast a shadow over that excitement. The biggest question on gamers’ minds has been performance. Pitchford’s clear statement on social media was met with backlash, especially among players expecting 60 FPS. Comments about the Switch 2’s technical details appear to be influencing some fans’ pre-order decisions. Borderlands 4 has become a source of controversy even before its release.

Borderlands 4 Switch 2 Version Set to Limit 30 FPS

Randy Pitchford explicitly stated that 60 FPS is not the goal for the Switch 2 version of the game. The development team stated that performance will be around 30 FPS because they want to port all content without clipping. However, it has been stated that performance may drop below this value during intense firefights or multiplayer sessions.

Players were quick to react to this announcement. Some users said they wouldn’t buy games without a performance mode, while others brought up 60 FPS examples like Metroid Prime 4. In short, expectations are quite high, and comparisons are inevitable.

Another point of contention concerns physical copies. Pitchford stated that they don’t want to crop the game to fit cartridges and that physical versions will require downloads. This suggests the game-key card method will be preferred.

A positive development is that Borderlands 4 will support four-player local co-op and mouse mode on the Switch 2. Pitchford also stated that they are aware of the stability issues with Borderlands 3, but that all their focus is currently on the fourth game.
