Bungie Plans Subscription System for Destiny
Bungie continues to remain in the news with a series of scandals and statements from former employees. A new one has now been added to the corporate greed, toxic management and suppression of creative ideas that the studio has been involved in in recent years. According to the claims of former employees, Bungie seriously considered introducing a subscription system for the Destiny series for a while, but this idea was shelved due to intense objections from the team.
Toxic Culture and Extreme Profit Focus at Bungie Criticized
According to a new report published by Destiny Legarie, many former Bungie employees explained in detail how the company has undergone a corporate transformation, especially in recent years, and how this change has had devastating consequences. One of the most striking claims is that Bungie management discussed the idea of introducing a subscription model for the Destiny universe. However, this plan could not be implemented due to “violent” objections from the team.
This reinforces comments suggesting that the fundamental problem at the studio is “pure greed.” The report even notes that some executives have complained that the Trials of Osiris armor in Destiny 2’s PvP mode is too flashy, which could negatively impact cosmetic sales in the Eververse store.
But the criticisms aren’t limited to monetization policies. Former employees have noted a toxic hierarchy at Bungie, where ideas are only considered when they come from higher-ups. This approach is said to have severely limited the studio’s creative potential.
Another criticism that has been noted is that Bungie is increasingly becoming a “corporate HR company,” with players starting to be viewed as “customers” rather than “communities.” Some employees have reported receiving email warnings for talking about internal studio issues or their own projects on social media.
While some of these issues have been alleviated by the removal of some executives responsible for the Destiny team, the fact that these names have now moved on to Marathon, another important project for Bungie, has not eased concerns within the studio, as sources say Bungie “simply cannot afford” to fail on this project.
