Cancelled 1984 Game Big Brother Revealed After Years

Inspired by George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, the video game Big Brother was canceled in 1999 and was lost to history as a lost medium. However, many years later, an alpha version of the game was shared on the Internet Archive. This version also includes some files and information about the gameplay mechanics of the full version of the game.

Big Brother: The Game’s Story and Development Process

Big Brother was designed as a sequel story set in the dark world of 1984. Players control a character named “Eric Blair,” Orwell’s real name, to rescue his fiancée from the Thought Police. The game’s producer, MediaX, describes Big Brother as an “interactive adventure game,” and aims to combine the detailed world of Riven with the real-time gameplay mechanics of Quake.

Big Brother, which was introduced at the E3 fair in 1998 and attracted great attention at the time, even won the “Best Interactive Product” award at a satellite awards ceremony. However, the project was canceled in 1999 when MediaX lost the licensing rights for 1984. It is known that the game was 70% complete at the time and was planned to be released in autumn 1998.

The alpha version of the game was uploaded to the Internet Archive by an unknown user on March 1, 2025. This version includes instructions for running it on modern systems. In addition, gameplay footage and screenshots of the game have been shared on the Lost Media Wiki. This development created great excitement among lost media enthusiasts and 1984 fans.

The unexpected appearance of Big Brother both revived interest in Orwell’s work and showed that canceled games could resurface. This alpha version offers the opportunity to see what kind of experience the game aims to offer, while also creating an important opportunity to discover what remains of an unfinished project.
