Capcom Hasn’t Closed the Door on Onimusha 3 Remaster
The Onimusha series has been one of the classics fans have long yearned to see again. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, released in 2004, is particularly remembered as one of the defining titles of its era. However, in a recent statement, Capcom has made it clear that despite strong player demand, there are currently no plans for a remaster, with priority given to the new game in the series, Way of the Sword.
Hope Still Out for an Onimusha 3 Remaster
Series developers Akihito Kadowaki and Satoru Nihei directly addressed the issue of an Onimusha 3 remaster in an interview. Kadowaki explained, “We know there’s a huge demand for Onimusha 3. However, our entire team of approximately 170 people is working on Way of the Sword. Splitting resources would negatively impact the current project.” These words reveal that while Capcom respects the past, it is focused on the future.
However, it’s clear that the door isn’t completely closed. Nihei stated that Capcom has long wanted to return to the Onimusha series, but the right conditions only arose in 2020. This suggests the company is keen to keep the series alive but is proceeding cautiously with its plans. The possibility of Onimusha 3 being ported to modern platforms remains a possibility.
Onimusha 3, at the time of its release, was highlighted by Jean Reno’s Jacques Blanc and received critical acclaim for its cinematic scenes directed by Donnie Yen. Samanosuke’s story and expanded combat system earned the game over 1.5 million units sold. While critics noted its short runtime, the game has become one of the most memorable action games of the PlayStation 2 era.
In 2025, Capcom released a remaster for Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, reigniting interest in the series’ past. This move naturally drew attention to Onimusha 3. However, the developers are choosing to focus on the new game so as not to compromise the quality of Way of the Sword. For now, it seems there’s no choice but to wait, but the messages suggest that Onimusha 3 could one day be reborn.
