Children of Silentown review: One of the best indie game of 2023

When we were children, we were afraid of many things. This is one of the ways life protects us. Lucy is not a different child. In our Children of Silentown review, we will take a close look at the adventure of other children in the village like Lucy who are afraid of the forest.

I believe that indie games should always be given a chance, at least when the prices of games are so high, it’s nice to take a look at other games that will offer different tastes to us. Children of Silentown is one of these games. Developed in collaboration with Elf Games and Luna2 Studio, the game tells a story that is as cute as it is mysterious.

In the game, we manage a little girl named Lucy. There are people who have been missing in the village for many years and no one goes after them. Of course, this frustrates our heroine Lucy, who suffers from the same problem. She sets out on a journey to track down the missing people. But along the way she faces problems that she must solve using her intelligence.

On top of that, the fact that her family and the villagers don’t want to talk about it at all is one of the biggest obstacles in her way. But Lucy’s nightmares haunt her and give her the courage to solve the problem once and for all.

Progression in Children of Silentown is quite simple. You use your mouse to communicate with people and things. You use the information you get to solve the next problem. However, sometimes there are situations where you can’t get information.

In order to solve them, you may need to use Lucy’s unique voice to sing to soften the person or entity in front of you. At the same time, you can also get information about some items by singing. We don’t know these songs when we start the game. We need to obtain the notes and sing them by completing various tasks.

Children of Silentown review: Mini Games

There are mini-games in the missions we encounter during the game. Although there are usually tasks such as solving puzzles, there are also differentiations in some of them. For example, you can get involved in a frog race with a hedgehog and learn more about the monster in the forest. Your most important helpers along the way are your friends’ knowledge.

Although parents don’t want to talk about these events in front of their children, it is important to remember that children absorb information. You need to take the crumbs of information from your friends and village elders by making them happy in some way and add them to your own story.

During the progression we collect many useful items. It will be your task to figure out when and where to use them. However, you have to observe very well. Because even in the smallest hole, it is possible to find a piece to further your research. While we can sometimes use these items as they are, sometimes we need to move forward with the item we get by combining them.

In order to solve the problems, various puzzles appear before us. These are usually designed in a way that is not very difficult to solve. We have to sew a piece of fabric in the right order or make sure that the water reaches between two points. Each one has its own mechanics, but they’re enjoyable and provide the information needed to advance the story.

Children of Silentown PC review

As we go through the adventure, we don’t just solve notes or puzzles. We also collect stickers. You place them in your sticker book. At first it’s quite easy to find them, but in the later stages it gets harder to find them. Personally, I don’t want to leave my notebook unfinished, so you have to be very careful. I wouldn’t be lying if I said that I spent 15-20 minutes on some screens just excited to find a sticker. I haven’t found them all yet.

In terms of graphics, I have to say that Children of Silentown is not in a structure that we are used to from AAA games. The visuals, which are worked like a painting, show that it comes from an independent developer. However, this should not be understood as bad. Because the graphics don’t bother me and they look cute.

Children of Silentown’s soundtrack is also quite pleasant. However, it can be annoying to listen to the same music after a while when you are stuck in a chapter. Therefore, I had to mute the music from the menu after a while.

It’s important to remember that one of the most important details in an adventure game is the details of the story. If you don’t speak English, you can sometimes miss important details that we need to pay attention to, even though the language is not too heavy.

But I have good news. The game supports 14 languages, including Japanase, Korean, Portuguese and Turkish. It has been translated from the menus to all the conversations in the game. Although all communication is shown with speech bubbles (you can turn them off from the menu if you want).

I encountered the error once or twice. I couldn’t see the icons or conversations on the screen that needed to be clicked. Even though I’m sure it was there, I was able to solve it by going back to the main menu and then picking up where I left off. I don’t know if this problem is caused by my computer or the game, but if you encounter it, follow this method and it will be solved.

Conclusion

In our Children of Silentown review, I tried to convey all the details of the game. In general, it was one of the productions that made me very happy. Because I missed the point and click style, and the fluency in the story and the enjoyable puzzles increased my faith in indie games.

In the past period, I looked at many indie games that I didn’t even need to review, and I deleted most of them after 10-15 minutes. I tried to take Children of Silentown to the end. Since I haven’t finished the game yet, I don’t know the total duration of the game, but it has taken me 12 hours so far. It is definitely a production that deserves the price it gets.

If you like the game, you can buy it on Steam.
