China’s New Chips Are 10 Times More Powerful Than NVIDIA’s
Chinese scientists are challenging the superiority of US-based NVIDIA with the supercomputer chips they have developed. According to a study, the performance of China’s domestically produced graphics processors can surpass NVIDIA-supported supercomputers by up to 10 times in certain areas. This success is considered an unexpected result of the technology sanctions imposed by the US.
NVIDIA Received a Blow from an Unexpected Place
Chinese researchers achieved this success not only with hardware power but also with software optimizations. The team led by Professor Nan Tongchao from Hohai University managed to increase the efficiency of parallel processors by working with a “multi-node and multi-GPU” architecture. In particular, improvements made in data transfer and task coordination between nodes played a critical role in this performance increase.
Nan’s team completed a flood simulation in just three minutes using a system consisting of 200 nodes and 800 GPUs using domestic x86-based processors and graphics cards. The model has significant potential in areas such as flood management and disaster prevention.
US restrictions on technology exports have led China to turn to domestic chip production and software development. The inability to use NVIDIA’s CUDA software ecosystem on third-party hardware has led Chinese researchers to develop independent algorithms. However, experts warn that these software-based solutions cannot make up for hardware deficiencies indefinitely.
These new chips are not limited to flood simulations alone. They can be used in many different areas such as hydrometeorology, sedimentation and subsurface-water interactions. The research team plans to test the technology in broader engineering applications in the future. China’s breakthrough could mark the beginning of a new era in the race for global leadership in supercomputing technology. NVIDIA’s long-standing dominance is facing serious competition with this development.
