Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Still Has Hidden Secrets
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which stands out with its unique structure that transforms color and emotion into its combat system, hides more than players realize. In an interview with Eurogamer, the game’s director, Guillaume Broche, confirmed that there are still unsolved mysteries. However, he didn’t offer a single clue as to what these secrets are: “If I tell you, it won’t be a secret anymore,” Broche says, further intriguing players eager to uncover the mystery.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 May Have Some Secrets, But…
Broche also confirmed in the interview that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 draws inspiration from the Final Fantasy series. A direct reference to Final Fantasy VIII, in particular, appears in the game’s “Gestral Village” area, with characters trading cards. However, the director stated that the inspiration was only thematic; they strived to capture the “spirit” of Final Fantasy in the game’s overall atmosphere.
However, he admitted that some of the “so-called mysteries” players discovered weren’t actually planned at all. “Fans mistook secrets for mysteries. So we said, ‘Okay, let’s keep it a secret,'” Broche joked. This approach was a humorous way to respond to the community’s strong interest in the game.
Broche also expressed his satisfaction with players finding strategies that “hacked” the combat system. The emergence of combinations he hadn’t even considered demonstrates the sense of freedom the development team aims for. “My personal speedrun record was broken in less than a week. The community truly exceeded my expectations,” Broche says, proud of how players “ripped” the game apart in their own way.
Developer Sandfall Interactive is preparing to release a new update for the game soon. The update will include quality improvements and new story scenes. Broche says this additional content will offer “a little fun and a little surprise.” It looks like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will continue to be talked about not only for its combat but also for its mysteries — and there are still secrets hidden deep within the game waiting to be discovered.
