Clair Obscur’s 5-Year-Old Images Revealed

Some games undergo a major transformation from their initial idea stage. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was one of the notable examples of this transformation. The team, which set out five years ago with another project called “We Lost,” is now offering players a completely different universe. The old visuals and the leaked trailer that emerged reveal the evolution of the project.

Clair Obscur Was Originally a Steampunk Project Called “We Lost”

According to the information previously shared by Clair Obscur’s narrative leader Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the game was initially designed as a different fiction set in steampunk London, filled with aliens and zombies. In 2019, director Guillaume Broche was seen looking for voice actors for the project called “We Lost” in a recruitment posting on Reddit. Although the trailer and script links from that period are no longer accessible, some fans found the trailer and shared it on social media.

Shared on Twitter by Sekirodubi, the four screenshots show scenes from the game’s early development phase. The characters Frey, Lune, and Maelle stand out in these images. According to Svedberg-Yen, Frey later became Gustave, while Lune and Maelle kept their names.

The steampunk London atmosphere that Svedberg-Yen mentioned can also be clearly felt in the leaked video. While the old concept had more mechanical and traditional designs, the current version has a more abstract and artistic atmosphere. This difference clearly shows how the game has undergone a creative transformation.

In addition, new concept drawings by art director Nicholas Maxson-Francombe show scenes that are much closer to the current game world. The detailed layout of the Ominous monolith, Nevron creatures, and the main character group document how the game has come to its current identity.

These old contents show how much Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has changed to become what it is today. Fans have no doubt that the game they get at the end of this journey is the best version.
