Command & Conquer Legend Goes Open Source
Electronic Arts has made the source codes of four classic games from the legendary Command & Conquer series of real-time strategy games public. The open source codes are available under the GPL license. The codes include Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and Command & Conquer: Generals. This step is seen as an important milestone in terms of both preserving the history of the game and creating opportunities for new developers.
Details of Command & Conquer Open Source Codes
EA worked with technical director Brian Barnes, Respawn producer Jim Vessella, and long-time Command & Conquer community member Luke Feenan to bring this project to life. Feenan was also involved in the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, released in 2020, and the C&C Ultimate Collection, released on Steam last year.
Open source codes provide significant support for initiatives such as OpenRA and OpenSAGE, known for their fan projects. In addition, EA has released a modding support package for Command & Conquer with Steam Workshop support. This package includes assets such as XML, Schema, Script and map files for games using the SAGE engine. Supported games include C&C Renegade, C&C Generals & Zero Hour, C&C 3 Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath, C&C Red Alert 3 & Uprising and C&C 4 Tiberian Twilight.
This open source movement allows developers to work on old games and make innovations. Players can add features such as higher resolutions, better refresh rates and widescreen support with these codes. In addition, modders will now be able to make fundamental changes to games and create new content.
EA’s move was welcomed positively in the gaming community and created great excitement in the Command & Conquer community. Developers and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to reimagine this historic series with modern technology.
