Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition Introduced

Under its new ownership, Commodore has unveiled its first official hardware in 30 years, reviving the legendary Commodore 64 with modern technology. Announced as the Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition, this new device, powered by an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA, makes classic games from the 80s and 90s playable again, while also boasting modern connectivity options such as HDMI, Wi-Fi, and USB.

Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition Features and Prices

The new Commodore 64 is available in three versions: the classic beige BASIC Beige ($299), the color-changing transparent Starlight Edition ($349.99), and the limited-edition gold Founders Edition ($499.99). All versions come fully assembled and are 99% compatible with older games, cartridges, and peripherals.

Hardware-wise, the device is equipped with 128MB of DDR2 RAM and 16MB of NOR flash memory. Display output supports up to 1080p resolution via HDMI, while analog outputs also feature a DIN-8 connector. Audio features dual SID sockets and UltiSID FPGA emulation. The system is compatible with various file formats via USB and includes original Commodore 64 ROMs.

The keyboard features mechanical 66-key Gateron Pro 3.0 switches and a C64-style layout with RGB lighting. The keyboard features full n-key rollover support and industry-standard stabilizers. Integrated lighting provides a customizable user experience.

This new step for Commodore, acquired by Christian “Peri Fractic” Simpson, is seen as part of the company’s restructuring process. While the acquisition has not yet been fully finalized, the company states that production is guaranteed and the devices will ship on the specified dates. Orders are scheduled to ship in October or November 2025.
