Concord Has Predicted Its End From The Beginning
In recent years, we have frequently witnessed the collapse of live service projects in the gaming world. Many studios that follow giants like Fortnite are forced to close down before they can meet expectations. PlayStation’s ambitious hero shooter Concord also joined this bandwagon and was shut down just two weeks after launch and players were refunded. Sony’s plans to revive this project in the future were also foiled by the closure of developer Firewalk Studios.
Concord Developer Edition Leaked Online
An unexpected development took place after this dull story. According to VGC, a Concord developer version codenamed ‘FWChaos’ was leaked online. This version, dated November 14, 2023, shows the game as it was nine months before its official release. As in the retail version, it is not possible to skip the login screen in this version, but this obstacle can be overcome thanks to the developer menu.
There’s not much to do in the version reviewed by VGC. It’s possible to access planet information from the Galactic Guide menu, and examine the 16 playable characters from the Crew tab. However, the Job Board section is completely filled with placeholder text, and the store is, as expected, empty. The presence of developer-specific matching options in the settings menu has led to comments that this version could inspire some fan projects. However, this doesn’t seem very realistic for Concord, which couldn’t even exceed 700 players at its peak.
Ultimately, this leaked version is more of a look behind the scenes of PlayStation’s $200 million live service fiasco than a playable alternative for players. Although it doesn’t offer much beyond messing around with menus, it’s a candidate to be an interesting digital relic for those who want to see the technical traces of Concord’s failure.
