The Suikoden series, which has been silent for many years, is back on the agenda with Konami’s remarkable moves. First released for PlayStation 1 in 1995 and gaining a unique place in the JRPG world with its huge cast of characters, the series delighted its fans with Suikoden 1&2 HD Remaster, announced in 2023. Now, Konami aims to bring this cult series to a big place in the modern gaming industry. The company’s goal is to make Suikoden a brand that can compete with other AAA productions.

Suikoden’s Return and Future Plans

Konami’s big comeback plan for Suikoden is not limited to remaster projects. The company is working on a number of new initiatives to increase the series’ potential. In addition to Suikoden 1&2 HD Remaster, an anime adaptation of Suikoden 2 and a mobile game that adds new stories to the series were also announced.

Series producer Rui Naito told Bloomberg in an interview that they still have the notes from the old creative team and that they are using them to expand the series. Konami aims to develop new projects while staying true to the series’ roots. Naito also stated that their main goal is to make series creator Yoshitaka Murayama proud.

The Suikoden series is known for its fast-paced gameplay and over 100 playable characters. However, especially during its early games, the series’ pixel graphics were overshadowed by 3D-oriented games like Final Fantasy from the same era. Despite this, Suikoden 2 has been considered one of the best examples of the JRPG genre over time. The series’ sequels, which were released on the PS2, also have their own dedicated fan base.

Konami’s efforts to revive Suikoden are seen as part of the company’s overall strategy. The company, which has brought its old series to modern platforms with projects like Silent Hill 2 Remake and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, aims to regain a strong place in the market by combining nostalgia with new technology. These moves by Konami increase Suikoden’s potential to reach a wider audience with new projects. The series’ return is seen as an exciting development for both old fans and JRPG enthusiasts.
