Crash Bandicoot Movie Was Rejected Years Ago

When we say Crash Bandicoot, it is not just a video game character that comes to mind, but an icon that has established itself in the gaming world for years. While many game brands are now appearing with movie or series adaptations, it turns out that Crash Bandicoot actually came across such an opportunity years ago. However, the perspective on games was different at the time, and for this reason, this iconic character’s cinematic journey ended before it even started.

Hollywood Was Not Ready for Crash Bandicoot

In a new interview, Sega Europe and America CEO Shuji Utsumi explained that he proposed a movie adaptation of Crash Bandicoot to Hollywood in the 90s, but it was not taken seriously. He stated that video games were seen as a toy industry in the cinema world, and therefore his proposal was not taken seriously. According to Utsumi, at that time, the adaptation of games to cinema did not receive much commercial response.

Crash Bandicoot Movie Was Rejected Years Ago

Nowadays, the situation is quite different. Productions such as The Last of Us, Fallout, Super Mario, Sonic and the upcoming Borderlands have proven how profitable game adaptations can be. With their billions of dollars in box office revenues, these projects show that Hollywood now looks at games with a much different eye.

Crash Bandicoot has been a well-known and beloved character since 1996. With its colorful world and action-packed structure, it is considered a relatively easy series to adapt to the cinema. For this reason, Utsumi’s visionary step years ago is interpreted as a great missed opportunity when viewed from today’s perspective.

It is still unclear whether Crash Bandicoot will ever be brought to the big screen. However, considering the rise of video game adaptations, it no longer seems possible to completely rule out this possibility. Fans continue to wait for this beloved character to finally meet the movie he deserves.
