Even though Days Gone, which came out exclusively for the PS4 in 2019, received a lukewarm reception at launch, it has still managed to create a cult following in the years since. The same enthusiastic section of Days Gone players has also urged Sony to greenlight a sequel, but to no avail. However, in February 2025, these fans received some positive news after a PS5 exclusive remaster of the original was announced during the State of Play livestream. Bend Studio is now soon to roll out an enhanced version of its zombie game, with Days Gone Remastered set to offer upgraded visuals as well as bonus in game content.

On the PlayStation Blog, Bend Studio revealed that the new Horde Assault mode extends the original Days Gone runtime with an additional 10 hours of gameplay. In this game mode, the player will go up against increasingly challenging hordes consisting of Reachers, Breakers, and Rager bears in order to survive as long as possible and create a high score. There are more than 20 different weapons, including a flamethrower, and 24 gameplay modifiers called Injectors to choose from. Among these Injectors are “Exploding Freakers,” which causes the Freakers to explode when killed, and “Wanted,” which lets the player experience the highest difficulty from the get-go. Alongside the post, the devs also released a new trailer focused on Horde Assault, showing Deacon, Boozer, Rikki Patil, and more in the thick of some intense action.

Horde Assault kicks off in the Cascade region of Days Gone’s map, with only one sidearm weapon available to the player. After progressing past the early wave, they get access to the Drifter bike, which they can use to explore the area for Supply Boxes, items that present the player with a random weapon each time. The newly added game mode also features Side Jobs, which can be completed for resources and extra XP. Moreover, it offers a reward path with 35 levels, through which the player can unlock a variety of Injectors, cosmetic patches, and playable characters, such as O’Brian, Lisa, and Skizzo, among others. Intriguingly, Bend Studio also teased that one of these rewards is “a highly requested item” that has something to do with the player’s bike.

With just over a month to go before the launch of Days Gone Remastered on PS5, the excitement among fans is understandably on the rise. While the remaster is only planned for PlayStation, PC players can also look forward to receiving these new game modes and related content, thanks to the Broken Road DLC coming to the PC port of Days Gone on the same day.
