DC Movie Set in Gotham Is Coming
Zach Cregger, who has recently made a name for himself with his breakthrough horror filmmaking, may be turning his attention to a story that takes on the streets of Gotham. While no official announcement has been made yet, it has been revealed that the acclaimed director has written a DC script set in the Batman universe and is writing this project with great passion. Cregger’s Gotham story explores the city from a very different perspective than the characters he’s known for and has already generated considerable curiosity.
Cregger’s Distinctive Take on the DC Universe
First teased in a 2022 interview after Barbarian, the script is set in Gotham, home to Batman. However, this story doesn’t star Batman, the Joker, or Harley Quinn. The script is written from the perspective of an ordinary gangster living on the dark streets of Gotham. This promises to offer a first-person perspective on the events from a lower-level perspective.
Cregger hasn’t submitted his script to any studio, which currently positions the project as a “passion work.” However, it’s known that DC Studios is greenlighting director-driven independent productions in its new era. The studio, particularly under James Gunn’s leadership, is opening up space for original stories set outside the main universe with its “Elseworlds” banner.
Cregger’s Gotham film could find its place in this very niche. Considering that The Batman series is also being developed under the “Elseworlds” banner, this project could follow a similar path. Furthermore, given DC’s recent productions focusing on the horror genre, Cregger’s script seems to align with current strategies.
It’s currently unclear whether this film will materialize. However, if Cregger’s rise in Hollywood, his passion for the project, and DC Studios’ creative vision come together, we might have the chance to explore an unseen side of Gotham. For now, we only have a script and plenty of hope.
