Deals Have Already Been Made for Overwatch Mobile
A new partnership that will shape the world of mobile games is on the agenda. Blizzard’s popular shooter Overwatch may soon be ported to mobile platforms. According to new information, an agreement has been reached with Korean-based gaming giant Nexon for the Overwatch Mobile project. The agreement is not limited to this; it also opens the door to the rebirth of the StarCraft brand on mobile.
Blizzard and Nexon Join Forces for Overwatch Mobile
According to South Korea-based MTN news, Blizzard gave the service rights for Overwatch Mobile in Korea and Japan and the authority to develop a new game in the StarCraft universe to Nexon. This partnership covers two major brands under a single agreement. While Blizzard has not had a serious initiative on the mobile side in particular, this move clearly reveals the company’s strategy for mobile games.
It is also claimed that Overwatch Mobile is referred to as “Overwatch 3” in internal company documents. This statement suggests that the new game may not just be a one-to-one mobile adaptation of the classic game; on the contrary, it may have a hybrid structure that bridges the existing console experience with mobile platforms. It is a matter of curiosity how Nexon will contribute to this project.
Although no clear genre statement has been made on the StarCraft side, job postings opened by Blizzard last year gave clues for a new StarCraft game. The mention of an open-world shooter in these postings brought the long-awaited FPS project set in the StarCraft universe to the agenda. Jason Schreier’s book also stated that Blizzard was making a new attempt after the previously canceled StarCraft Ghost and Ares projects.
Blizzard’s survival game “Odyssey”, which was developed by Dan Hay, whom we know from the Far Cry series, was canceled. Following this cancellation, the diversion of resources to brands like StarCraft and Overwatch reveals the company’s decision to move forward with existing strong brands. It is already clear that the projects to be implemented in collaboration with Nexon will be Blizzard’s most serious moves in mobile.
