Doctor Who May Not Return to Screens for a Long Time

Doctor Who was revived in 2005 under the leadership of Russell T Davies. However, the series’ low viewership figures in recent years, especially during the period when Ncuti Gatwa played the lead role, worried fans. Now, a pessimistic picture is being painted for the series’ future, and Doctor Who may be on the verge of a long hiatus.

Hopes for a New Season for Doctor Who Are Low

Disney+ is expected to end its broadcast and financing deal with Doctor Who this year. If this happens, the BBC will have to find a partner to refinance the series. However, it is stated that this process will be very slow. The slowdown in the industry in general in particular makes it unlikely that Doctor Who will return soon.

Former Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury has commented on the future of the series, saying that “no new seasons have been confirmed at the moment”. Spilsbury believes it will be at least another five to six years before new episodes are produced. The BBC may need to reach an agreement with re-production partners, or even re-engage with some of the names it has previously turned down.

A major plot break in the last season of the series – the transformation of the Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, into Billie Piper – left viewers in suspense. However, there may be a long period of silence after this scene. As Spilsbury puts it, “nobody is expecting a return any time soon.”

According to some rumours, the BBC may be moving towards a low-budget home-production version. However, this model no longer seems viable. There has also been talk of major platforms such as Netflix and HBO getting involved. While these possibilities are promising, it seems unlikely that Davies will remain at the helm at the moment.
