Doom: The Dark Ages Made History

Bethesda’s Doom: The Dark Ages, released this month, had a profound impact not only on today’s players but also on the history of the series. According to the official statement, the game was id Software’s biggest launch to date. Reaching three million players, the game reached this number seven times faster than Doom Eternal and became the owner of a new record.

Doom: The Dark Ages Broke Records

The success of Doom: The Dark Ages was clearly seen in both digital sales figures and player access. According to SteamDB data, the game topped Steam’s sales charts for the week of May 13–20, 2025. It was followed by productions such as Steam Deck, Stellar Blade, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Cyberpunk 2077. This showed that Doom attracted not only old fans but also new generation players.

Bethesda also announced that a large portion of this impressive player count came from the Xbox platform. According to Ampere data, more than two million of the three million players accessed the game on Xbox. One of the biggest reasons for this is that the game was added to the Game Pass library on day one. Thanks to this, a much wider range of players had the opportunity to experience the game from launch day.

Doom: The Dark Ages, which also received positive reviews from game critics, brought a new breath to the series with a more “down-to-earth” gameplay style. Most critics described the game as a production that was “nostalgic but high-energy, with pure gaming charm.”

It was especially appreciated by fans for successfully blending the spirit of classic Doom with the modern gaming world. This impressive launch once again demonstrated how the Doom brand has evolved over time and how powerful an impact it can still make.
