Dragon Age: The Veilguard Made a Bad Start
Dragon Age: The Veilguard fell short of expectations on its opening weekend. The game’s concurrent player count was limited to 89,418, a very low number for what BioWare and EA were aiming for as a big release. Compared to the prominent RPGs of 2024, The Veilguard fell far behind its competitors.
Can The Veilguard Achieve Commercial Success?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s launch performance is even more evident when compared to other RPG games. For example, Dragon’s Dogma 2 reached 228,585 concurrent players on Steam. That’s almost three times as many as The Veilguard, and despite being a sequel to a less popular franchise, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has received much more attention. The Veilguard managed to repeat the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, which managed to sell 12 million copies, seems quite difficult for now.
It is unclear whether The Veilguard will be a financial success. BioWare is clearly in dire need of a commercial success after the big budget productions Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda. However, given its opening performance, it seems unlikely that The Veilguard will achieve that success for now. Although the minimum number of copies the game needs to sell is unknown, it seems that it will be difficult to make a profit without selling millions of copies.
