EA Not Interfering with Split Fiction Team’s New Game
Hazelight Studios’ Split Fiction, released in March 2025, has been a huge success both commercially and critically. The game, which sold 1 million copies within 48 hours of its release, also broke the concurrent player record for an EA production on Steam. However, Hazelight Studios announced that instead of stopping after this success, they started working on their next game. The company’s founder Josef Fares explained that EA did not interfere in their processes and that the studio had complete creative freedom.
Hazelight’s New Project After Split Fiction
Josef Fares stated in the Friends Per Second podcast that Split Fiction was the best game they had ever made, and expressed that they were very excited about their new project. Fares emphasized the studio’s self-confidence by saying, “We are not stressing about how we are going to surpass Split Fiction. Just wait and see what our next game is.”
While no detailed information has yet been given about the new game, it is expected to offer an innovative co-op experience when compared to Hazelight Studios’ previous productions. Considering that the company’s development process usually takes 3-4 years, it is estimated that the new game will be released in 2028 or 2029.
Although all of Hazelight Studios’ games have been published by EA, Josef Fares emphasized that the studio decides on its projects completely independently. Fares said, “We do not present our games to EA, we tell them what to do. We do not allow them to interfere in any way.” Fares also admitted that EA has problems collaborating with other studios, but stated that there is no such problem in their relationship with Hazelight.
Split Fiction, which can only be played co-op, has been highly acclaimed for its deep story, impressive characters, and innovative game mechanics. Players can share the game with their friends thanks to the Friend’s Pass system. This feature makes Split Fiction, like Hazelight’s previous games, a more accessible experience.
Hazelight Studios looks set to take the success it achieved with Split Fiction one step further. While details about its new projects are still vague, the studio’s independent approach and innovative gameplay are increasing fans’ expectations.
