EA Sports Suspends Rally Projects
EA Sports, which owns the long-established rally game developer Codemasters, has made a decision that will upset rally enthusiasts. The company announced that it will not produce any more content for EA Sports WRC and has “paused” all future rally game projects. According to the official statement, the content update called Hard Chargers will be the last addition to the series.
EA Sports is Leaving Rally Games
EA Sports announced its decision in its official blog post with the words “Every journey has an end.” The EA Sports WRC game will continue to be on sale and players will be able to access the existing content. However, no new updates or sequels are planned. The company stated that they appealed to rally enthusiasts with great passion with this game, but that they have now come to the end of this journey.
After Codemasters was acquired by EA in 2020, EA, which monopolized the WRC license, released only one game called EA Sports WRC. This production was planned to cover the 2023 and 2024 seasons. However, there is no clear information about the future of the WRC license at the moment. In a short social media statement, it was stated that the series was “moving in an ambitious direction” and that “more news will come soon.”
EA also considers this farewell as the end of an era. Referring to legendary off-road series such as Colin McRae Rally and DiRT, the company said that the Codemasters collaboration gave its final link in rally games with EA Sports WRC.
The development team stated that they have worked with many iconic athletes and experts to date, but that they will now continue this excitement in other ways. The future of the WRC brand remains uncertain for now. However, EA Sports’ withdrawal from the rally scene means the end of an important era for fans of the genre.
