EA’s AI Tools Are Doing More Harm Than Good

Electronic Arts (EA), one of the gaming giants, is investing heavily in AI-powered game development systems. However, the company’s in-house AI tool, ReefGPT, appears not to be working as planned. According to Business Insider, the tool frequently generates incorrect code, creating additional workloads for developers and slowing down the process rather than speeding it up.

EA’s ReefGPT Tool Is Making Developers’ Jobs Harder

According to reports, this generative AI tool, called ReefGPT, was designed to be integrated into EA’s game development processes. However, the system’s “hallucinations”—that is, writing incorrect, out-of-context code—are causing significant disruptions to projects. Developers are forced to manually fix these errors, which is counterproductive in terms of both time and cost.

Some employees express concern that the tool will be used as a “replacement system.” The report states that developers believe they are actually “training the system to replace them” by assisting ReefGPT. This has reignited debates about the use of artificial intelligence in the industry.

Last year, EA unveiled its AI tools with a grand demonstration. The company claimed users could create game ideas with just a few commands. However, reports now reveal that the public demonstration didn’t fully reflect reality. The results of ReefGPT are described as both technically flawed and creatively “lackluster.”

Furthermore, amidst these problems, EA is in the process of being acquired by a massive $55 billion investor consortium. Experts believe this acquisition could lead to further “cost-cutting” measures at the company—potential layoffs and studio closures. It’s believed the investors will place productive AI technologies at the center of this strategy.

On the other hand, union representatives are objecting to this process. Employees are demanding that AI be used to support the creative process rather than replace human labor. However, given the current landscape, AI’s goal may be to gradually eliminate the human element to reduce production costs.
