Elder Scrolls Online is undergoing a major transformation
As Elder Scrolls Online celebrates its seventh year, it’s preparing for a series of new developments that will surprise its community. This week, ZeniMax Online Studios launched a major event that pits all servers against each other for the first time. This event, called “Writhing Wall,” is seen not only as new content but also as a first glimpse into how the game will evolve in the future.
ZeniMax Launches a New Era for Elder Scrolls Online
The Writhing Wall event opened to all players on October 13th, sparking intense competition across the community. The first phase of the event received mixed reactions as players attempted to break through the wall through daily-based quests. Some experienced players noted that the quest structure was repetitive, and the studio emphasized that these criticisms will guide future content.
ESO’s associate design director, Mike Finnigan, said the event was merely a test run: “The Writhing Wall should be seen as a harbinger of the future. It’s the beginning of an era where we take risks but also trust our players.” Finnigan stated that the studio’s goal is now to “break the mold of conventional MMOs,” adding that ESO will introduce even more bold and diverse content in the future.
ZeniMax’s goal is to make Elder Scrolls Online a long-term MMORPG. Studio director Rich Lambert recently announced their goal for the game to be a “30-year MMO.” Finnigan also supported this vision, saying, “We can’t predict where we’re going, but we do know we don’t want to be ordinary.” He believes the key to ESO’s success will be unpredictable events and constantly innovating content.
Finnigan added that the MMO genre is now drawing inspiration from diverse genres and placing community experience at its core. “We’re seeing new ways players are interacting. ESO must adapt to this change. We no longer want to be tied to the typical event cycle,” he said.
While the Writhing Wall event may not have satisfied everyone, this initiative is seen as a promising turning point for ESO’s future. The studio plans to accelerate the game’s evolution by learning from these experiences. It appears Elder Scrolls Online is poised to launch not only with new content but also with ideas that will redefine the concept of an MMO in the gaming world.
