Everything Changes in Toy Story 5
Toy Story 5, returning after years apart, could mark a critical turning point for Pixar. The studio, which released many of its films exclusively on digital platforms during the pandemic, aims to reclaim its former power in theaters. This time, the focus won’t be on Woody or Buzz, but on Jessie. Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, shared important clues about the new film during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Toy Story 5 Could Be a Reboot That Will Rewrite the Series
Allen confirmed that Jessie will be the centerpiece of the film and that the story will revolve around her. “It’s like a reboot,” the actor said, summarizing the story’s core narrative: “Jessie is in a difficult situation and needs your help. We’re all in different places, but she’s trying to bring everyone back together.”
He also mentioned a humorous island scene in the film: “There’s a plane crash, just like in Castaway. There’s an island where 100 Buzz Lightyear figures crash, and they all disappear. It’s a very fun idea.” Allen also stated that the scene was improvised.
In Toy Story 5, the toys face a completely different enemy: technology itself. The film’s villain is said to be a frog-shaped tablet called the “Lilypad.” This is interpreted as a clever reference to children’s evolving interests and the modern age of toy life.
Directed by Andrew Stanton, the film features a strong cast including Tom Hanks (Woody), Joan Cusack (Jessie), Tony Hale (Forky), and Conan O’Brien (Smarty Pants). Toy Story 5, which preserves Pixar’s classic spirit while refreshing the series with new themes, will hit theaters on June 19, 2026. This time, Jessie takes over—and nothing in the toy world will ever be the same again.
