Evolve 2 Almost Became Real
Released in 2015 with great anticipation, Evolve attracted attention with its multiplayer feature, but quickly lost interest and lost players. Its repetitive gameplay and aggressive add-on content policy shortened the game’s lifespan, and the servers were shut down in 2018. Despite this negative outlook, it became clear that developer Turtle Rock Studios was making serious progress on Evolve 2, and the game was almost ready for launch.
Evolve 2 Project Cancelled in Concept Stage
According to images in the portfolio of an artist working at Turtle Rock Studios, Evolve 2 entered pre-production shortly after the first game’s release. The 15 pieces of concept art revealed suggest that the second game will offer more expansive and story-driven areas than its predecessor. A massive asteroid mining station named “Akhenaten” and a return to the planet Shear from the original game are among the most striking details. Below, you can find a total of 15 pieces of concept art.
The concepts feature city settlements, diverse spaceships, and much more expansive environmental elements. The development team aimed to break the repetitive structure in the second game with a more sequential mission structure and diversified map systems. However, the project was canceled after only a few months of this early phase. This was largely due to the studio shifting its focus to another project, which later became Back 4 Blood.
Evolve, although among the games that were prematurely abandoned, experienced a brief resurgence in 2022 thanks to peer-to-peer servers created by players. However, this method also became impossible in 2023. This situation is cited as an example of the increasing calls to “keep games alive.” Players are now demanding that games whose online support has ended remain playable.
