Far Cry’s Future Might Be Different Than Expected

For years, the Far Cry series, distinguished by its expansive maps, single-player narratives, and chaotic combat, has earned a strong place in the hearts of gamers. However, recent statements from Ubisoft suggest a significant shift in the series’ future. The potential for new games to shift the franchise’s traditional structure, focusing on multiplayer, is generating both excitement and concern.

The Far Cry Series is Moving Toward Multiplayer

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot hinted at the series’ future in a speech in August 2025. Guillemot stated, “Our goal for Far Cry is to bring multiplayer elements to the forefront and ensure long-term player retention,” signaling the series’ direction. While this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of single-player narratives, it’s clear that the emphasis on multiplayer will continue to grow.

The mixed reviews of Far Cry 6 appear to have influenced Ubisoft’s new strategy. The intensity of its RPG elements and artificial progression systems were criticized. Now, the company plans to extend the game’s lifespan by emphasizing its live service features.

The partnership between Tencent and Ubisoft may also be instrumental in this transformation. With the joint venture established in March 2025, Tencent has a stake in major franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six, in addition to Far Cry. Therefore, Far Cry 7’s new direction may align with the global market’s growing interest in multiplayer games.

Meanwhile, a rumor that emerged in 2023 claimed that Far Cry 7 would bring a new dimension to its single-player gameplay. Players would be given 72 hours of gameplay, limited to playing outside safe zones, with the protagonist’s race to save their family as the primary focus. If this idea holds, we could see a hybrid experience combining story and multiplayer elements.

Ubisoft’s new approach has divided fans of the series. Some players are worried about losing Far Cry’s free-flowing single-player experience, while others believe that a new focus on multiplayer will inject fresh energy into the series. For now, the only certainty is that the future of Far Cry will be very different from what we’ve known so far.
