Fast & Furious 11 Is in Danger Due to Cost
Fast & Furious, one of the longest-running action franchises of all time, is currently facing budget issues, not pacing. Fast & Furious 11, planned as the series’ second and final installment, is at risk due to high costs and delayed production. According to the Wall Street Journal, the film’s script has not yet been approved, and the producers are facing a serious financial crisis over the massive budget.
Fast & Furious 11’s Future Uncertain
The previous film, Fast X, was the most expensive production in the series with a massive budget of $340 million. Although it grossed $700 million worldwide, this revenue did not generate the studio’s expected profit. Therefore, Universal Pictures is seeking to reduce the new film’s budget to under $200 million. However, current script estimates indicate that the production cost is still around $250 million.
To address this gap, the production team plans to reduce international filming locations and limit the number of high-priced actors’ appearances. However, this risks losing the franchise’s traditional glamour. Furthermore, the film’s multiple postponements have further uncertain the future of the production.
Vin Diesel previously stated that the film would be released in April 2027. Director Louis Leterrier had previously suggested a 2026 release date. However, Universal has not yet announced an official date. The filmmakers aim to shoot the majority of the film in Los Angeles. However, the city’s high labor costs and limited tax incentives are exacerbating budgetary constraints.
Nevertheless, the team wants to return the franchise to its roots. The new film will reportedly shift its focus back to street racing. It’s also unclear whether Paul Walker’s character will be brought back digitally.
Despite everything, the Fast & Furious universe doesn’t seem to be coming to a complete halt. Universal is developing spin-off films and live-action series focusing on certain characters. A low-budget spin-off project is also on the table. The fate of the series appears poised to hinge on how the budget crisis unfolds. For now, the only certainty is this: Fast & Furious 11 faces a serious financial setback before it can break any speed records.
