Final Fantasy Remake Series Could Continue With Fourth Game
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake series has become a massive remake project, ongoing for nearly six years. While much of the story has been told with Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, it’s still unclear whether the third installment will complete the series. In a recent interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi highlighted “unfinished possibilities” for the third installment and shared a hint that has fans excited.
Naoki Hamaguchi Hints at a Continuation of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Series
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that they are focusing on the development of the third installment but are “leaving the door open for the future.” Hamaguchi confirmed that they initially planned DLC for the second installment, saying, “We considered developing additional content for Rebirth for a while. But we’ve decided that our priority is to deliver the third installment to the fans as soon as possible.”
However, Hamaguchi’s words didn’t end there. The director revealed that the idea of an expansion pack or an entirely new game is on the table after the third installment:
“We have the possibility of developing DLC or a new title after completing the third installment. We believe that interest in the Final Fantasy universe will increase once the series concludes, and we want to capitalize on this interest.”
This statement raised the possibility of a fourth installment, despite the series being promoted as a “Remake trilogy.” Following Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, there are still many loose ends in the story. The possibility of future game adaptations of side stories like Dirge of Cerberus, particularly those related to the events of the Advent Children film, has generated considerable excitement within the fan community.
Screenwriter Tetsuya Nomura previously stated that the third installment would connect to Advent Children. This suggests that Square Enix may be expanding the Final Fantasy 7 universe with a new narrative, rather than completely closing the story. Hamaguchi’s statements are seen as an indication that these plans are beginning to materialize.
