First Details Released from Amazon’s God of War Series

The God of War series, adapted from Sony’s iconic video game series, had been quiet for a long time. First announced in December 2022 and slated to enter the writing phase in early 2024, the production was “starting from scratch” late last year due to changes in the production team. However, with announcements made at San Diego Comic-Con this year, the series got back on track. Series leader Ronald D. Moore provided insightful information about both the writing process and the adaptation process.

What Kind of Adaptation Will the God of War Series Be Like?

In an interview with Collider at Comic-Con, Ronald D. Moore confirmed that the series is currently in the scripting phase. Moore stated that exploring Kratos’ universe was “fascinating” for him and expressed his fascination with the depth of the games’ mythology.

The series will reportedly be based directly on the 2018 God of War game. However, it won’t be a one-to-one adaptation. According to Moore, the series will maintain “the spirit of the characters and the overall flow of the story.” Game director Cory Barlog’s direct involvement in the project also significantly contributes to this process. Moore stated that they held multiple meetings with Barlog, and through these meetings, the 10-episode structure of the first season was finalized.

While it was previously announced that the series would run for at least two seasons, Moore stated that he didn’t want to push it too far. “I never get too ahead of myself, so we don’t really talk about future seasons,” he said, remaining cautious about long-term plans.

The start date for filming is still uncertain. It’s been confirmed that production won’t begin until 2026, but no specific date has been given. This means fans waiting for the series will have to be a little more patient.

The God of War series demonstrates the importance Amazon places on game adaptations like Fallout and Mass Effect. Let’s see how successfully this big production will bring Kratos’ anger to the screen.
