Former PlayStation Executive Makes PS VR2 Confession
Sony’s PS VR2, which will be released in 2023, received mixed reactions from gamers due to its high price and lack of backward compatibility. Former Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida stated in a statement that he thought PS VR2 would be a milestone like PlayStation 2, but this expectation did not come true. Yoshida said, “I’m sorry I was wrong. PS VR2 did not make an impact like PS2.”
Why Did PS VR2 Fail to Meet Expectations?
Although PS VR2 offered impressive features technically, it was the target of criticism from the moment it was released. The device, which started at $ 549.99, required a PlayStation 5 or PC, and its lack of support for previous PS VR games was seen as a major disadvantage. Shuhei Yoshida summarized this situation with the words, “We set out with the hope of starting a new era for VR technology, but we could not achieve this goal.”
Another reason for the low sales of the device was that the virtual reality market was still a high-cost hobby. Players had to buy both an expensive console and a VR headset, which created a major obstacle for new users. There were also reports that Sony did not provide sufficient game development support for the PS VR2 and reduced its investments in this area.
Although Sony has taken steps such as expanding the PC compatibility of the PS VR2, the future of this device remains uncertain. The failure of the PS VR2 raises questions about whether Sony will continue with virtual reality projects. Shuhei Yoshida’s self-criticism clearly shows that more attention and investment is needed for the development of this technology.
Despite its powerful features, the PS VR2 could not reach its goal due to its high pricing policy and user-unfriendly decisions. It is a matter of curiosity whether Sony will reconsider its strategies in this area.
