Former Sony Exec Likens PC Sales to Printing Money
Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida said that porting PlayStation games to the PC platform was very profitable for the company, describing it as “almost like printing money.” In an interview, Yoshida said that Sony was initially hesitant to switch to this strategy, but that porting to the PC was an important step in reaching a new player base and growing the brand.
Sony’s PC Strategy
Yoshida said that porting PlayStation games to the PC provided Sony with both a new source of revenue and new players. He stated that Sony aims to increase interest in the PlayStation brand by reaching PC gamers, especially in regions where the console is not popular. Yoshida said that the idea that this strategy could encourage gamers to buy PlayStation consoles was a significant motivation for Sony.
In addition, porting games to PC is also a cost-effective option for Sony. Yoshida stated that the cost required to port a game to PC is much lower than developing a new game, and that this situation offers Sony the opportunity to invest in new projects.
Yoshida stated that another important factor in Sony’s shift towards PC is the Chinese market. Emphasizing that China is a large PC game market, Yoshida stated that Sony’s access to this market will increase its revenues. He gave the Black Myth: Wukong game, which was a great success in China, as an example and drew attention to the importance of such markets.
Sony’s interest in PC games has increased greatly in recent years. The company has achieved great financial success from these moves while porting popular games such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part I to PC. Yoshida’s statements once again reveal that this strategy is part of Sony’s long-term plans.
