Former Witcher 3 Developer Regrets Some of His Decisions

The Witcher 3 is considered one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, but lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz has expressed some annoyance with some of the things he did in the game. Tomaszkiewicz said in an interview with GamesRadar+, “There are some things I don’t like so much that I would like to go back in time and fix them.” However, he didn’t explain exactly what those changes were.

Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz left CD Projekt Red, where he worked for 12 years, in 2021 and is currently working with his brother Konrad Tomaszkiewicz at a new game studio, Rebel Wolves. Tomaszkiewicz said he was unhappy with some of the decisions he made in Witcher 3, but he stated that they learned from those mistakes and did better work in their next projects.

Witcher 3 received critical acclaim and won numerous awards when it was released in 2015 for its deep storytelling, impressive side quests, and open-world design. However, Tomaszkiewicz stated that despite the game’s success, some decisions made during the development process still bothered him.

Tomaszkiewicz is currently working on Rebel Wolves’ first project, Blood of Dawnwalker. The open-world RPG game, set in a dark fantasy world, is about a universe devastated by vampires and plagues. The main character, Coen, is a hybrid of human and vampire, trying to survive in both the day and night worlds.

No release date has been announced for Blood of Dawnwalker yet, but a gameplay video is expected to be shared this summer. Tomaszkiewicz believes that working with a smaller team on their new project will allow them to take more innovative steps in the RPG genre.

Tomaszkiewicz explained the reason for leaving CD Projekt Red as, “I want to bend the rules of RPGs and do more things with a smaller team.” Despite the success of The Witcher 3, he stated that he wanted to take a different approach with Rebel Wolves.
