Game Sales in Europe Drop 29% This Year
In Europe, 2024 was a tough year for game sales. According to data published by GamesIndustry, new game sales decreased by 29% compared to the previous year. Following major releases such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, and Diablo IV in 2023, the lack of similarly sized games in 2024 played a significant role in this decline. In particular, anticipated titles such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Star Wars Outlaws fell short of sales expectations.
A Major Game Shortage in 2024
2023 was etched in memories as a golden year for the gaming world. Major titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 broke sales records and left their mark on the industry. However, 2024 could not continue this success. Star Wars Outlaws and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, in particular, ranked 14th and 19th respectively on the new games list, but fell much further down the overall sales charts.
Some of the best-selling games of the year came from well-known series such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. However, the general picture shows that new games are not attracting enough attention and players are turning to previously released games.
2025 may be the year of the return of big productions in the gaming world. Giant games such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Monster Hunter Wilds and Grand Theft Auto VI are expected to be released. In addition, the introduction of a new Nintendo console could give the sector a dynamic movement.
However, this decline in 2024 has once again revealed the necessity of the gaming sector to constantly produce high-quality content. The lack of big productions may affect not only sales but also the interest of players in the sector. Time will tell whether 2025 can reverse this negative picture.
