Gearbox Warns Borderlands 4 Players

The long-awaited Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12th for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. However, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford issued a particularly pointed warning to PC gamers. Pitchford stated that the game could be virtually unplayable on devices below the minimum system requirements. This statement has raised concerns among players looking to experience the game on older hardware.

Borderlands 4 May Have Issues Below Minimum System Requirements

Pitchford shared on social media that the game will be released with a major update and that performance issues will be significantly reduced. However, he emphasized that the game shouldn’t be expected to run smoothly on systems below the minimum requirements. Pitchford emphasized that performance issues experienced by lower-end PCs are inevitable, saying, “If the game even launches on your system, it’s a miracle.”

Borderlands 4 stands out with its expansive open-world and intense combat scenes, developed with Unreal Engine 5. This requires significant hardware power. The minimum requirements call for an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor, 16GB of RAM, an RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card, and 100GB of SSD space. The recommended system requires higher-end hardware such as 32GB of RAM and an RTX 3080.

These high requirements appear to be particularly challenging for PC players using older hardware. Pitchford’s statements indicate that Gearbox is working to technically optimize the game, but limitations are inevitable on devices below a certain hardware threshold.

Borderlands 4 takes place on Kairos, the series’ most ambitious map, and promises to offer players new vaults, side missions, and extensive end-game content. However, a powerful system is almost essential for a smooth experience. While excitement is high for series fans, it’s clear that expectations should be kept low for those considering running the game on older PC hardware. Pitchford’s message is clear: Borderlands 4 is designed for next-gen, and the journey on older systems may be much more challenging than expected.
