George R.R. Martin Confesses 15 Years of Working on Winds of Winter
Master fantasy writer George R.R. Martin has broken his silence about Winds of Winter, a book he’s been working on for 15 years. Speaking at New York Comic Con, the author addressed the relentless writing process and constant criticism, saying, “I’m never happy about breaking contracts or missing deadlines.”
Winds of Winter Became an Obsession for Martin
In an interview, Martin admitted that the delays were tiring not only for readers but also for himself. “I know there’s been a lot of discussion about how late Winds of Winter is,” he said. “It’s been quite frustrating for me, too, because I’ve always struggled with deadlines.” His words serve as both an apology and a statement to long-awaited fans.
After Game of Thrones’ controversial finale, fans were expecting Martin to rewrite the series. However, the author’s shift to other projects has fueled impatience. His contributions to Elden Ring and his work on the new animated film A Dozen Tough Jobs, in particular, have rekindled the question, “Why doesn’t Martin finish the book?”
The author stated that he was tired of these criticisms but that it was impossible to dedicate his entire production to just one work. “Every time I announce a new project, the internet goes crazy,” Martin said, defending himself by saying, “But sometimes I want to bring to life ideas that have been on my desk for years. Not all of them mean abandoning Winds of Winter.”
Martin also emphasized that the book’s scope is much broader than previous volumes, and that the character density within the story lengthens the story. “As the world grows, there’s more to tell. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it’s not,” the author said, reiterating his commitment to finishing the series.
