GPD Win Max 5 Introduced
The handheld console market is about to be shaken up. GPD’s next-generation handheld, the GPD Win Max 5, has finally launched with the Strix Halo APU. The released promotional video and technical details demonstrate that the device’s performance is not only suitable for portable devices but also comparable to many desktop systems.
GPD Win Max 5 Takes a Step Up with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395
The GPD Win Max 5 uses the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU from AMD’s powerful Strix Halo series. This 16-core, 32-thread chip, combined with the Radeon 8060S iGPU, delivers graphics performance far beyond the limits of handheld consoles. The promotional video clearly demonstrates the device’s promise, as it runs a demanding game like Black Myth: Wukong at over 160 FPS.
CPU temperatures on the handheld console remained between 65–69°C, demonstrating the effectiveness of the dual-fan, four-heatpipe cooling system. The Radeon 8060S iGPU’s stable operation at 2300–2500 MHz also stands out as a very high graphics frequency for portable systems. The alternative Ryzen AI Max 385, with its 8-core architecture, is aimed at users seeking lower power consumption.
The 7-inch 120Hz display, with FreeSync Premium and 100% sRGB support, offers gamers a smooth and vibrant display. Thanks to Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection, the device is also impact resistant. With 32 to 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM and PCIe 4.0 SSD options ranging from 1 to 4TB, it aims to provide a desktop experience.
One of the most striking features of the GPD Win Max 5 is its removable battery system. While the 80Wh battery will be sold separately, some packages state that it will be included directly in the box. The device offers up to 2 hours of battery life under heavy use and up to 6 hours under light tasks. Additionally, the wired mode, which can be directly connected to the battery, further enhances the device’s flexibility.
The GPD Win Max 5 will be showcased at ChinaJoy 2025, which will be held from August 1–4, 2025. The official release date is scheduled for October 2025. The Strix Halo’s impressive performance could redefine the standards in the portable game console world.
