GTA 5 is on sale in Saudi Arabia, but not everyone can play it
Long banned, GTA 5 has finally been officially released in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, this late release has brought with it some restrictions and controversy. The game’s access in the country is restricted by an unusual age limit, and the lack of localization has fueled discontent among players.
GTA 5 Has Been Granted a Special 21+ Age Rating
GTA 5, available in Saudi Arabia, has been released with a special age rating unavailable elsewhere in the world. The game has been given an 21+ rating, further highlighting the controversial nature of the game’s content in the region. PlayStation Arabia announced that GTA 5 and GTA Online have been granted a 21+ age rating in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. However, this decision has sparked some player outrage.
Some social media users argued that the age restriction did not make the game’s content “halal” and argued for more radical changes. There were calls, in particular, for the removal of nightclubs and open-air scenes. These reactions demonstrated that the game’s content still provoked sensitivity.
Another point of criticism was the lack of localization. The game’s lack of Arabic translation hindered access for many players in the region. Some users stated that young people who did not speak English would not be able to fully enjoy the game. Despite a local release, the lack of a fully localized product further fueled controversy.
GTA 5 was already playable in these countries through various means. However, this official release marked a first in the game’s history. However, factors such as the 21+ tag and the lack of translation prevented this late launch from being as enthusiastically received as anticipated.
