Rockstar’s highly anticipated game GTA 6 continues to be talked about with details that players have not missed, even though it is still months away from release. Following the trailers, an image shared on the official website brought up a possibility that has never been seen before in the series: There may be child characters in the game’s open world for the first time.
No Child NPCs in the GTA Series Before
The GTA series has intentionally not included child characters in its open world to date. The main reason for this was that the high freedom given to players meant that there was a possibility of harming children. This situation was considered both ethically controversial and prevented by the developers because it could create problems in game rating systems.
However, an image called “Grassrivers 02” on the GTA 6 website has sparked discussions that this rule may change. In the image, a character that is noticeably smaller than the surrounding NPCs stands out. This detail has been interpreted by many players as indicating a child character.
This possibility means a significant change for the GTA universe. Although some indirect references have been made to school buses, pregnancy, or children, no game has ever featured child characters that are physically open to interaction. Similar restrictions are applied in other open-world games. For example, although there are child characters in Cyberpunk 2077, players cannot harm these characters.
The boundaries regarding child characters in the game world are generally clearly drawn. Projects such as inZoi and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 clearly show that child characters have been removed or restricted from games due to potential reactions.
It is also possible that the image shared for GTA 6 is only for promotional purposes. It is also possible that the person seen in the image is actually just a short adult. However, the possibility that Rockstar could break new ground in this area has increased players’ curiosity.
