GTA 6 On Track to Become the Most Expensive Game in History
According to recent rumors, the development process of GTA 6 has cost Rockstar Games between $1-2 billion so far. This figure makes the game the most expensive video game in history. It surpasses the previous most expensive games, Destiny (2014 – $500 million), Cyberpunk 2077 (2020 – $330 million) and Modern Warfare 2 (2009 – $310 million).
The Costs of GTA Games Are Increasingly Increasing
The development of GTA 5, which was released in 2013, cost Rockstar $250 million. However, that game made over $1 billion in revenue in just 3 days after its release. Therefore, it can be said that the high development cost has been more than recovered.
So will GTA 6 really surpass these previous games? If the budget information leaked in 2023 is correct, it seems so. GTA 6 is a candidate to be the most ambitious and anticipated game. Players have been fixated on GTA 5 for over 10 years and have been waiting for concrete news about the new game.
After a 100 GB data leak, Rockstar was forced to admit that it was working on a new GTA. With the first trailer released in December 2023, GTA 6, which could possibly be the best game yet, has partially emerged.
When we look at the history of the series, it is seen that there has been a significant increase in development costs with each new GTA game. If the rumors are true, GTA 6 is setting the bar for very expensive games:

Given the way the numbers are rising, it’s even possible that the next GTA game could cost $3 billion and take 15 years to make. But that’s just playing with the numbers.
Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, has a market value of around $32.5 billion. Therefore, spending $1.5 billion on GTA 6 over a 10-year period does not seem unrealistic. Especially considering how much revenue the game will bring when it is released.
If the rumors are true, GTA 6 is already on its way to becoming the most expensive game ever. This increases the expectations and excitement for the game even more. Let’s see if Rockstar will make an official statement on this subject next year.
