Helldivers 2 May Take Up Less Space on PC

Helldivers 2 is one of the most talked-about games in the co-op genre, but its PC storage footprint has frustrated many players. The game’s current 135GB storage requirement poses a significant obstacle, especially for players with limited SSD capacity. However, new statements suggest that this file size is unnecessarily large and could be reduced to more reasonable levels in the future.

Helldivers 2 PC File Size Sparks Debate

Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani reignited the debate by responding to a player’s question on Discord, “Why is the file size so large?” Jorjani stated that reducing the file size is now a “priority issue,” but he couldn’t yet say when it would happen. This statement was considered promising, as it at least indicates that the problem has been acknowledged and the development team is working on it.

Helldivers 2 May Take Up Less Space on PC

The main reason for the high file size appears to be a technical glitch. According to a post on Reddit, many assets (textures, models, etc.) in the game are duplicated multiple times across different packages. This means the same textures are stored multiple times, resulting in an unnecessarily large file size of 140 GB. It’s suggested that fixing this bug could reduce the game’s size to approximately 31 GB.

This issue isn’t unique to Helldivers 2. The Call of Duty series has previously experienced similar issues, with shadow updates achieving significant file size reductions. If Arrowhead follows suit, an unexpected update could potentially save players significant storage.

While no specific date has been announced yet, players are expecting file size optimizations to arrive soon. Helldivers 2 continues to grow with new content not only on PC but also on consoles, and controlling file size will be a critical step for long-term support.
