Hideki Kamiya Isn’t Giving Up on His Scalebound Dream
Famous game designer Hideki Kamiya is not giving up on his dreams for Scalebound, an Xbox-exclusive action RPG that was canceled in 2017. Developed by PlatinumGames and announced for Xbox One in 2014, Scalebound was shelved in 2017 due to development difficulties. However, Hideki Kamiya stated that he still has hope for the project and wants to develop the game again.
Hideki Kamiya and Scalebound’s Story
Scalebound was announced as a fantasy action RPG that tells the story of a hero who fights dragons. The game followed in the footsteps of Hideki Kamiya’s previous projects, action-oriented productions such as Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. However, the project could not be completed due to technical difficulties and problems experienced during the development process.
Hideki Kamiya left PlatinumGames in 2023 to form a new studio called Clovers, which includes former team members. The studio is currently working on a sequel to Okami. However, Kamiya shared on social media that he is still excited about Scalebound and called Xbox manager Phil Spencer to talk about restarting the project.
Xbox is currently known to be working on many big-budget RPGs. Projects such as Avowed and the new Fable game are among Xbox’s priorities. Therefore, it seems difficult to find a suitable timeline for Scalebound’s redevelopment. In addition, the abundance of similar games in Xbox’s current game portfolio makes the possibility of Scalebound’s revival even more uncertain.
Despite Hideki Kamiya’s struggle for Scalebound, the project is not expected to come to life anytime soon. However, the possibility of such projects returning in the gaming world always remains a matter of curiosity. Players are eagerly waiting to see if the project will be revived.
