Icarus Coming to Next-Gen Consoles

Icarus, the survival game developed by legendary DayZ creator Dean Hall, is coming to consoles after a long wait. The announcement was made with a special trailer released at today’s Galaxies Showcase event. The game will be available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in the first quarter of 2026.

Icarus Will Arrive in an Expanded Version on Consoles with New Content

The console version is being developed by a separate team from Dean Hall’s New Zealand-based studio, RocketWerkz. This version, developed by Grip Studios, based in the Czech Republic, is being developed by an experienced team with previous experience on projects such as Mafia: The Old Country, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Conan Exiles.

Icarus originally launched on PC four years ago. While it received mixed reception at the time, the game’s status has improved significantly with three major expansions and numerous updates. The console version will offer the most refined version of this legacy. The New Frontiers expansion, released in 2023, will be included in the console version, providing players with a rich starting experience.

Dean Hall confirmed in a statement that there will be no cross-play between the PC and console versions. Hall said, “I didn’t want to slow down PC development because of the console, and I didn’t think it would be right to make the console dependent on the PC.” He emphasized that the two versions were developed independently. Due to this difference, there will be some differences in game content and optimization between the versions.

However, the console version’s biggest advantage will be improved gamepad support. Hall stated, “The console version should offer the best console experience, while the PC version should remain PC-exclusive.” It has been confirmed that the game can be played both solo and in online PvE (player versus environment) mode with up to eight players.

With the release of console ports, Icarus will finally have a chance to reach a wider player base. The combination of both the mature content on PC and the smooth control mechanics of the console could breathe new life into the game.
